About Josh

Josh-pre-post-collage

Josh LaJaunie is a self-described “WHO DAT” (Saints' fan) and plant-based ultra-runner from Thibodaux, Louisiana. Josh's story is a powerful “excuse breaker” – if you think you can't because of what life has thrown at you, read Josh's story to discover what's truly possible.

Josh grew up in a large family of large people, and as a football lineman, he was encouraged to get as big as he could. After dropping out of college following a back injury, Josh returned home to a life of excessive eating and drinking and partying and ballooned to somewhere north of 420 pounds by 2011.

Less than three years later, he was running marathons, advocating for a whole food, plant-based diet, and getting noticed by some of the most influential people in the field of health and fitness (Rich Roll and Garth Davis, MD, among others).

Josh won the coveted Runner's World Cover Search contest in 2016, and then started getting calls from national media. He's been featured on Good Morning America, The Today Show, People Magazine, Great Day Houston, and The Hallmark Family Channel.

Josh's mission is to share the simple power of healthy lifestyle, especially with his Coonass family, friends, and community in the bayou of southeast Louisiana. His family is on board – his mother, brother, sister, brother-in-law, and grandfather lost over 900 pounds combined.

You can read his story in Sick to Fit, and “study” with him at Sick to Fit University (STFU), and get instructed and inspired at our Sick to Fit retreats

About Howie

Howie Jacobson, PhD, knows a lot, and thanks to Josh, has actually been putting it into practice to improve his own health and fitness.

Howie is a teacher and coach, and loves sharing the message of healthy living, and empowering people to take control of their habits, behaviors, environments, and health destinies.

He's host of the Plant Yourself Podcast, and in addition to writing Sick to Fit and Use the Weight to Lose the Weight with Josh, is the author of a bunch of other books. Like You Can Change Other People, with Peter Bregman; Whole: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition, with the indefatigable and spectacular T. Colin Campbell, PhD; and Proteinaholic, with the fierce and brilliant Garth Davis, MD.

After meeting Josh in 2016, Howie went from well-informed couch potato to ultra-runner. He's competed in three 50k races, four marathons, and a bunch of half marathons and 10ks.

With Josh, Howie co-founded WellStart Health, a digital health improvement platform that lasted for three years before we euthanized it.

Howie earned his MPH and PhD in Health Studies from Temple University, and his BA from Princeton University.

He lives on an ecological farm in rural North Carolina, where he writes, gardens, plays Ultimate Frisbee, and podcasts.

His goals include shaking up healthcare, sharing how delicious and joyful a healthy life can be, saving the planet, and reintroducing people to their most authentic, resilient, best selves.
